When medical emergencies occur, Catholic Medical Center’s Emergency Department (ED) is ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week. CMC’s ED is a full service, state-of-the-art facility that is prepared to treat anyone experiencing a serious acute illness, injury or trauma. We feature 30 treatment rooms equipped with bedside monitoring capabilities, and dedicated areas for trauma, cardiac, stroke, and pediatric patients.  Our team of physicians, nurses and other skilled caregivers are equipped to provide expert care and treatment.

CMC’s Emergency Room is designated as a Level III Adult Trauma Center and Level IV Pediatric Trauma Center.  This demonstrates our ability to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgery, intensive care and stabilization of injured patients. In addition to 24-hour coverage by emergency medicine physicians and general surgeons, CMC can transfer patients requiring more comprehensive care to a Level I or Level II Trauma Center.

If you or someone you know is experiencing an emergency always call 911 first.

Diagnosis, Treatment and Technology

Specialized Emergency Care

CMC’s highly-trained physicians are certified by the American College of Emergency Physicians.  Our nursing staff and EMS team have received specialized emergency care training and hold various emergency care certifications.

Clinical Affiliation

In addition to our own emergency medicine physicians and general surgeons, CMC has a clnical affiliation with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), with a focus in the areas of general and vascular trauma and emergency surgery.

Clinical Decision Unit

Not all patients who come to the ED need to be admitted to the hospital – yet not everyone is ready to be sent home. CMC’s Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) provides ongoing, short-term observation, assessment, and treatment for these patients.  The time a patient spends in the CDU allows providers to administer short-term therapy and decide on whether a hospital admission is necessary.
