UTIs: A Bummer in the Summer

How to recognize and respond
A Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) can come on suddenly and make it painful to urinate.  The problem usually requires medical treatment.

Signs of a UTI
The following warning signs may indicate a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI):
Pain or stinging when you pass urine
Urge to pass urine often, but not much comes out when you go
Pressure in your low belly
Urine that smells bad or looks milky, cloudy or reddish in color
Seeing blood in your urine
Feeling tired, shaky or having a fever

“Anytime someone has symptoms suspicious for UTI they should be evaluated,” said Jennifer Jameson, MD, CMC Urgent Care Center, Bedford, NH. “I don’t typically recommend home treatment for more than a day.”

The CMC Urgent Care Center takes walk-in appointments for UTIs. To see if you have an infection, your Urgent Care provider will test a clean sample of your urine.

Dr. Jameson recommends quick action if any of the above warning urinary symptoms occur along with pain in the mid-back, nausea/vomiting and fever . This may indicate a worsening infection.

To treat a Urinary Tract Infection, your Urgent Care provide may prescribe an antibiotic. Most people feel better in a day or two.

What causes UTIs?
A UTI is an infection in the urinary tract.  Bacteria getting into the urinary tract causes the infection. This can happen during a bowel movement or through sexual activity.  Dr. Jameson recommends urinating after sex as a way to decrease the risk of infection.

How to avoid UTIs
To avoid letting a UTI ruin any plans for summer fun, Dr. Jameson says it is important to avoid dehydration during heat, humidity and sunshine. Stay hydrated with plenty of water. Aim for six to eight glasses of water a day.
