Surgical Options Weighing Your Surgical Weight Loss Choices
Surgical weight loss options available through the Obesity Treatment Center include the laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass, laparoscopic gastric sleeve and adjustable gastric banding. Choosing the procedure that is right for you takes careful consideration. If you are a candidate for one of these procedures, you will work closely with our team, includingphysician assistants, nurse practitioners, an internal medicine physician, nutritionists, surgeons, behavioral health specialists, and exercise physiologists. You will work together with our multidisciplinary team throughout the pre-surgical process, which usually takes approximately 6 to 8 months. Unlike other programs that focus solely on surgery, the Obesity Treatment Center’s approach offers individualized guidance and support before, during and after weight loss surgery to optimize your long-term outcome. Gastric Bypass
The gastric bypass procedure involves dividing the stomach and forming a small stomach pouch .The surgeon then attaches a section of the small intestine directly to the pouch. This allows food to bypass a portion of the small intestine that absorbs calories and nutrients. Having the smaller stomach pouch causes you to feel full sooner and eat less food; bypassing a portion of the small intestine means your body absorbs fewer calories. Gastric bypass offers the best results for improvement or remission of Type 2 Diabetes. Gastric Sleeve
During this procedure, the surgeon creates a small sleeve-shaped stomach about the size of a small banana. The gastric sleeve significantly reduces stomach capacity, while maintaining the nutritional absorptive capabilities of the small intestine. Adjustable Gastric Banding
An adjustable silicone band is surgically inserted and placed like a belt around the upper part of the stomach. The band is connected by thin tubing to an access port just below the skin. Through this port, your surgeon adjusts the fit of the band. The band reduces your stomach capacity and restricts the amount of food you’re able to eat at one time. You will feel full sooner and stay full longer, so you, ultimately, eat less food. Support services are available through the Obesity Treatment Center.
