February 11, 2016—Tiny red hats, knitted and crocheted by volunteers for the American Heart Association, are being donated to all babies born at Catholic Medical Center’s (CMC) Mom’s Place and Special Care Nursery to celebrate American Heart Month throughout February.

Catholic Medical Center  (CMC) is participating in the American Heart Association’s Little Hats, Big Hearts program, which raises awareness of heart disease, the number one killer of Americans, and congenital heart defects, the most common type of birth defect in the country.

“It is important to us that we help educate our new parents about the importance of heart health from the very start,” states Nicole Pendenza, BSN, RNC-NIC, Director of Maternal, Child and Women's Health. “The hats serve as a reminder that while we cannot prevent heart defects, early recognition and intervention can help lead to the best outcomes.”

This is the first year New Hampshire Hospitals are participating in the Little Hats, Big Hearts program, which provides hats to newborn babies in 34 states across the country.  “At CMC, the caring hands of a group of dedicated employees knit additional hats to distribute to our babies,” adds Pendenza.

American Heart Month is an annual celebration in February that began in 1963 to encourage Americans to join the battle against heart disease. A presidential proclamation pays tribute each year to researchers, physicians, public health professionals and volunteers for their tireless efforts in preventing, treating and researching heart disease.   heart.org/NHLittleHatsBigHearts
