Breast Cancer Screening

Breast cancer, when diagnosed in it its earliest stages, is highly curable. That’s why early detection with screening mammography is so important. Women are urged to begin annual mammograms by age 40 to establish a baseline of a woman’s breast health and detect abnormalities early, when treatment is more effective. But not all breasts are created equal. Some require more detailed screening.

Our sophisticated breast imaging equipment and novel techniques can help reduce call backs, spot abnormalities early, and reduce the number of follow-up tests for suspicious findings—even in dense breasts, which are the most difficult to screen. Most of our advanced breast screening services are conveniently located at CMC’s Breast Care Center.

At the Breast Care Center, your care continues with our fellowship-trained breast surgeon, who specializes in breast conservation, nipple-sparing mastectomy and "oncoplastic" surgery.

Diagnosis, Treatment and technologies

Digital screening mammography

Digital screening mammography is a routine, annual mammogram performed using state-of-the-art digital mammography equipment, reviewed by a board-certified radiologist, and compared to any previous breast images to watch for areas of concern. Digital mammography equipment typically shows tumors before they are big enough for you to feel.

Digital Diagnostic Mammography

A diagnostic mammogram usually involves special pictures of your breasts to examine a lump or something seen on a screening mammogram. The radiologist reviews your study before you leave and provides you with same day results. Breast ultrasound may also be performed with a diagnostic mammogram.

Automated Breast Ultrasound System (ABUS)

Automated breast ultrasound allows us to evaluate any spots that show up on a mammogram or to take an additional look at dense breast tissue.

Breast MRI

A breast surgeon may order a breast MRI to gain detailed images of breast tissue in patients who have a known cancer or a high risk or suspicion of cancer.

In a breast MRI, the patient lies face down on a special table that allows the breasts to hang without being compressed.  The MRI machine then uses magnets, instead of radiation, to scan the breast and create a picture of the soft tissue.

Contrast Enhanced Mammography

Contrast enhanced digital mammography helps to give a clearer view of a breast nodule or lesion detected on a mammogram. Using an injected contrast dye causes cancer to ‘light up’ on the mammogram. This is a powerful and sensitive tool to detect cancer.

Breast Biopsy

If you need a breast biopsy, we perform stereotactic and ultrasound-guided breast biopsies, as well as fine needle and cyst aspirations. Your biopsy is coordinated with your doctor, the radiologist and our breast health specialist to make sure you get the right biopsy for your situation.

Bone density scan (DEXA)

Women who have been treated for breast cancer may be at an increased risk for bone loss. A bone densitometry scan, or DEXA, is an x-ray that measures bone loss. A DEXA scan can help determine if you are at risk of bone fractures due to cancer related osteoporosis.

Hidden Scar™ Breast Cancer Surgery

Hidden Scar™ breast cancer surgery is a type of breast cancer surgery where the incision sites are hidden, and scars are not visible when the incision heals. The Hidden Scar™ approach can be performed for both nipple sparing mastectomy or lumpectomy procedures. Hidden Scar breast cancer surgery is an advanced approach to removing breast cancer.

Scars matter! Dr. Jessica Ryan is highly skilled at removing the cancer and prioritizes your cosmetic outcome. While many women see their breast surgery scars as an empowering symbol of beating cancer, others do not. Studies show that breast surgery scars significantly impact a woman’s psychological and emotional recovery and quality of life after surgery because scars can have a large impact on a woman’s self-confidence, intimacy and body image.

Seeing the difference

can make the difference

CMC’s Breast Care Center believes image quality and clarity lead to a quick detection and diagnosis. Using advanced and state of the art technology, such as the Hologic Genius™.  The Hologic Genius™ provides patients with faster scans, less radiation, more comfort with the SmartCurve® system and is FDA approved for better screening of Dense breast.

Our Siemens Mammomat Revelation—takes both 2-D and 3-D images and is used for stereotactic 3-D biopsy and contrast enhanced mammography. The image clarity of the breast tissue allows us to detect and diagnosis breast cancer at the very earliest stage. It provides wide-angle breast tomosynthesis, providing a better view of breast tissue than a standard mammogram while using far less radiation.
