Early detection saves lives

Breast cancer occurs when normal cells in the breast change and grow out of control. Women sometimes discover they have breast cancer because they find a lump in one of their breasts. Breast cancer is much more common in women than in men. But men can get the disease too.

If you feel a lump in your breast, see your provider right away. Breast lumps can be caused by conditions that are not cancer, but it is best to have any lumps evaluated.

For women facing breast cancer, the team at CMC's Breast Care Center provides you with the tools you need to succeed in your journey. This includes the most sophisticated technology allowing accurate diagnosis, the most innovate and emerging surgical techniques, and an ongoing commitment to survivorship care.

Trust the team at CMC’s Breast Care Center to provide compassionate care to meet your needs.

Breast Cancer Care During COVID-19

A message from Dr. Jessica Ryan, Medical Director, Breast Care Center

As the COVID pandemic continues to evolve, we will continue to adapt our practices in order to offer you the highest quality in breast health and screening, all while being safe. We incorporate guidelines presented by national organizations with the needs and landscape we find here locally. While it may be safe to delay screening for several months, CMC has  reopened our screening mammography services. If you have a breast concern, such as a new breast lump that doesn’t go away, this needs prompt attention and can be taken care of safely in our center, again all while keeping you safe. Our team will guide you through the entire process, from prevention and screening to surgery and recovery, if necessary. Our nurse navigators coordinate your care with different specialists, every step of the way.

  • Support groups
  • Education resources
  • Ancillary/lymphedema support/rehab
  • Oncology exercise program

Sensitive, Safe Screening

Breast cancer is highly curable if it’s diagnosed in its earliest stages. That’s why early detection with screening mammography is so important. Our sophisticated mammography equipment and novel techniques can help reduce call backs, spot abnormalities early, and reduce the number of follow-up tests for suspicious findings.

Comprehensive breast surgery

Suspicious lumps may be further evaluated with a biopsy. We perform stereotactic and ultrasound-guided breast biopsies, as well as fine needle and cyst aspirations. Your biopsy is coordinated with your doctor, the radiologist and our breast health specialist to make sure you get the right biopsy for your situation.

If you need surgery, CMC's fellowship trained breast surgeon specializes in breast conservation, nipple-sparing mastectomy and "oncoplastic" surgery. This technique combines breast reconstruction with tumor removal, resulting in a superior cosmetic outcome and, for most women, a more complete post-surgical body image.

Hidden Scar™ Breast Cancer Surgery

Hidden Scar™ breast cancer surgery is a type of breast cancer surgery where the incision sites are hidden, and scars are not visible when the incision heals. The Hidden Scar™ approach can be performed for both nipple sparing mastectomy or lumpectomy procedures. Hidden Scar breast cancer surgery is an advanced approach to removing breast cancer.

Scars matter! Dr. Jessica Ryan is highly skilled at removing the cancer and prioritizes your cosmetic outcome. While many women see their breast surgery scars as an empowering symbol of beating cancer, others do not. Studies show that breast surgery scars significantly impact a woman’s psychological and emotional recovery and quality of life after surgery because scars can have a large impact on a woman’s self-confidence, intimacy and body image.

Seeing the difference

can make the difference

Our state-of-the-art 3-D tomosynthesis mammography machinea Siemens Mammomat Revelation—takes both 2-D and 3-D images, and can be used for stereotactic 3-D biopsy and contrast enhanced mammography. The image clarity of the breast tissue allows us to detect and diagnosis breast cancer at the very earliest stage. It provides wide-angle breast tomosynthesis, providing a better view of breast tissue than a standard mammogram while using far less radiation.
