Illiac aneurysm in pelvis is difficult to detect and previously offered doctors few treatment options

The New England Heart and Vascular Institute at Catholic Medical Center continues to pioneer heart and vascular health, announcing the successful implantation of the new GOREÒ EXCLUDERÒ Iliac Branch Endoprosthesis (IBE).  This is the first off-the-shelf aortic branch device approved in the United States and the only device indicated for the endovascular treatment of common iliac artery aneurysms or aortoiliac aneurysms. CMC is the first hospital in the Northeast to use this device to treat a patient suffering from an Illiac Aneurysm.  The IBE All-in-One System is designed specifically to treat this specific type of aneurysm, which is a bulging and weakness in the iliac artery of the pelvis. They are difficult to detect because symptoms do not often occur unless the aneurysm is large or there is significant compression in the surrounding areas of the body.

W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc. (Gore) designed this all-in-one system to preserve iliac artery blood flow in patients with iliac or aortoiliac aneurysms.  According to Dr. Patrick Mahon, vascular specialist at CMC who performed the successful procedure, "preservation of blood flow in the iliac arteries reduces the rate of complications into other areas of the lower body. Advances in technology like The IBE offer patients a transformative and much less invasive option in the treatment in the treatment of iliac aneurysms”.

“We are very pleased with the results of the patient’s procedure and are thrilled to be the first in New England to offer this new approach to treating Iliac Aneurysms” said Dr. Louis Fink, Medical Director of the New England Heart and Vascular Institute.
