Natural Family Planning

Managing and Monitoring Your Fertility Naturally
By monitoring your biological signs of fertility, you can manage and understand your fertility without using hormonal drugs. As your body approaches, enters and leaves the fertile phase, it experiences physical changes. You can easily learn to identify and interpret these natural signs of fertility to confidently know when you are fertile or infertile on any given day.

Natural family planning (NFP) education services at Catholic Medical Center include a choice of three NFP systems:
FertilityCare™ System, Marquette Model, and Standard Days Method.

1. FertilityCare™ System
The FertilityCare™ System is a highly effective method of natural family planning and its effectiveness in preventing pregnancy is equal to popular hormonal drugs and devices. Women in all reproductive categories can use this system.

The system can be used to:
  • Achieve pregnancy
  • Avoid pregnancy
  • Understand menstrual cycles

FertilityCare™ System: Identifies Reproductive Problems
The FertilityCare™ System is also a valuable tool for couples who are having trouble becoming pregnant. Monitoring fertility markers allows a woman to know if she has a reproductive abnormality. Doctors can use this information with the new science of NaProTechnology to treat problems such as:

  • Infertility
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Irregular or abnormal bleeding
  • Polycystic ovarian disease
  • Repetitive miscarriage

FertilityCare™ System Sessions
Group and private introductory sessions for the FertilityCare™ System are held monthly at Catholic Medical Center’s Community Health Services. Individuals and couples who enroll in the program after the introductory session receive eight private instructional sessions, so the system can be customized to meet each woman’s or couple’s unique needs.

2. Marquette Model
With the Marquette Model, a fertility monitor is used at home to measure hormone levels in urine to pinpoint your ovulation. This information is used in conjunction with other biological markers of fertility to confidently determine your fertile times. With proper use, this system is highly effective in achieving or avoiding pregnancy. Marquette Model classes include both group and private sessions. This method can be used by women in all reproductive categories.

3. Standard Days Method
The Standard Days Method (SDM) is an effective new method of natural family planning developed through scientific analysis of the fertile time in your menstrual cycle. If you want to avoid pregnancy, you track your menstrual cycle and avoid intercourse on fertile days 8 through 19. Most users of SDM rely on CycleBeads, a color-coded string of beads, to help them track their cycle and identify the days when pregnancy is most likely. With proper use, this method is highly effective in avoiding pregnancy. Only women with regular cycles of 26 – 32 days in length can use this system. Standard Days Method classes may be taken in group or private sessions.

*Blue Distinction® Centers met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. Blue Distinction® Centers+ also met cost measures that address consumers’ need for affordable healthcare. Individual outcomes may vary. National criteria is displayed on www.bcbs.com. A Local Blue Plan may require additional criteria for facilities located in its own service area. To find out which services and providers (including hospital based physicians) are covered under your policy, or to learn about Local Blue Plan Criteria, contact your Local Blue Plan; and contact your provider before making an appointment to verify its current Network and Blue Distinction Centers status. Each hospital’s Cost Index is calculated separately, based on data from its Local Blue Plan. Hospitals in portions of CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in areas served by two Local Blue Plans, resulting in two Cost Index figures; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether all hospitals in these areas must meet Blue Distinction Centers+ national criteria for one or both Cost Index figures. Neither Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association nor any Blue Plans are responsible for damages, losses, or non-covered charges resulting from Blue Distinction or other provider finder information or care received from Blue Distinction or other providers. To find out more, contact your Local Blue Plan.
