The surgical treatment for prostate cancer is called a prostatectomy, which is the removal of the entire prostate gland. Most prostatectomy procedures are done through large surgical incisions, which lead to a long and uncomfortable patient recovery, a high level of blood loss and the risk of impotence and incontinence. Laparoscopic prostatectomy is a minimally invasive technique that reduces these problems and risks.
The da Vinci® Intuitive Surgical Robotics System is a laparoscopic surgical robot that integrates the most recent advancements in robotics, computer technology and surgeon’s skill level. It is an advanced surgical system that allows surgeons to see anatomical structures more clearly and to perform more precise surgeries. The da Vinci Intuitive Surgical Robotics System enables surgeons the ability to perform complex procedures through tiny surgical openings. The surgeon’s hand movements are translated into movements of the micro-instruments within the operation site.
The robot sits on a console next to the patient. It consists of three arms, one holding a tiny camera and the other two holding surgical instruments. The arms are inserted through one-centimeter incisions and are guided by the surgeon who sits at a second console a few feet away. This second console allows the surgeon to get a three-dimensional view of the surgery, as well as allows magnification up to ten times. Using the controls at the console, the surgeon is able to cut, clamp and sew inside the body without having to make large incisions.
The da Vinci® System duplicates the surgeon’s exact movements. This duplication is unlike a standard laparoscopic procedure, where the surgical instruments give the surgeon a mirrored image of his/her movements.
Potential benefits of the da Vinci Intuitive Surgical Robotics System:
- Shorter hospital stays
- Less pain
- Less blood loss
- Minimal scarring/smaller incisions
- Faster recovery
Catholic Medical Center is one of the first hospitals in the country and the first hospital in New England to offer this treatment. Catholic Medical Center takes a team approach to this procedure. Along with the surgeon, surgical assistant and anesthesiologist, there are two other team members: a circulating nurse and a surgical scrub assistant. Both individuals are responsible for setting up the room and the da Vinci® Intuitive Surgical Robotics System. The circulator also provides preoperative assessment and operating assistance including anesthesia needs, patient positioning and documentation. The scrub also helps the surgeon and surgical assistant at the operating room table, providing instruments and assisting with the procedure. All of these individuals form a strong team that provides consistent and professional care for every patient.
