What you need to know before participating in a research study

What is a research study?

A research study can be an experiment, investigation, survey, or questionnaire that evaluates or tests new or existing drugs, medical equipment, procedures or clinical therapies that lead to or contribute to generalized information.

What is informed consent?
Informed consent is a process that is an essential component of any research study. It is an agreement to voluntarily participate in a research study. Before agreeing to participate in a research study, you should be able to:
  • Understand what is going to happen to you in the study
  • Know what is investigational from what is the standard care
  • What are the alternatives to participation
  • Participating in Research

If you have the opportunity to participate in a study, what questions should you ask?

Research Study Questions:
  • Why is this research being done?
  • What is the purpose of the study?
  • Who is sponsoring the study?
  • Who is paying for the study?
  • Who, or what organization, has reviewed and approved this study?
  • Why does the research team think the treatment, drug or medical device might work?
