The surgical treatment for prostate cancer is called a prostatectomy, which is the removal of the entire prostate gland. Most prostatectomy procedures are done through large surgical incisions, which lead to a long and uncomfortable patient recovery, a high level of blood loss and the risk of impotence and incontinence. Laparoscopic prostatectomy is a minimally invasive technique that reduces these problems and risks.

The da Vinci® Intuitive Surgical Robotics System is a laparoscopic surgical robot that integrates the most recent advancements in robotics, computer technology and surgeon’s skill level. It is an advanced surgical system that allows surgeons to see anatomical structures more clearly and to perform more precise surgeries. The da Vinci Intuitive Surgical Robotics System enables surgeons the ability to perform complex procedures through tiny surgical openings. The surgeon’s hand movements are translated into movements of the micro-instruments within the operation site.

Catholic Medical Center takes a team approach to this procedure. Along with the surgeon completing the procedure, there are two other staff members taking part in the surgical process. The circulator is the staff member responsible for preoperatively assessing the patient, helping the anesthesia staff, properly positioning the patient, preparation, the documentation process and the overall running of the room. During the procedure, the first scrub is the staff member at the table working with the surgeons, handing the instrumentation to the surgeon and helping with the procedure. Together, the circulator and first scrub set up and calibrate the robot before the patient gets into the operating room. This team works closely to ensure a strong continuum of care for every patient.

Catholic Medical Center is one of the first hospitals in the country and the first hospital in New England to offer this treatment. Catholic Medical Center offers this procedure to patients across the greater northeast region.
