Currently, Catholic Medical Center is in the process of constructing ten state-of-the-art operating suites; 15,500 square feet of space includes new pre-and post-surgical care areas in addition to new operating room suites.

Below is a list of funding opportunities for community members who are interested in supporting this important project.

Flexible Bronchoscope System
Cost: $53,000
Bronchoscopy is an examination that allows a doctor to see inside the airway. A Bronchoscopy may be done to identify problems that may be causing inflammation and bleeding, to diagnose certain lung diseases or diagnose and determine the extent of lung cancer. Finally, a bronchoscope may be used to remove foreign objects that may be blocking the airway.

A flexible bronchoscope is a long, thin tube that contains many small, clear fibers or a small camera that can transmit light images as it bends. The newer technology of the flexible bronchoscope allows for more comfortable procedures for patients and better diagnostics for clinicians.

Fluid Waste Management System
Cost: $50,000
A Fluid Waste Management system is an ecologically sound way to improve safety from exposure for Catholic Medical Center staff and reduce cost to CMC for waste removal. A system like this disinfects fluid waste from the operating room and other patient care areas. Canisters are then removed from receptacles by a mechanical arm that removes the lid, treats the liquid waste and makes the canisters safe for the landfill. This reduces the amount of biohazardous waste that is produced by the hospital and, in particular, the Department of Surgery. By implementing a fluid waste system, CMC will not only help the environment but also save money which can then be used to support further technological updates to improve health outcomes for members of the greater Manchester community.

Operating Room Bed for Bariatric Patients
Cost: $50,000
A core principal belief of Catholic Medical Center is to help people achieve a healthy lifestyle. Over the past few years, hundreds of patients have opted to undergo highly effective weight loss surgeries such as LAP-BAND® or gastric bypass surgery, as a way to achieve this lifestyle. Due to the increase in need demand for this service, the need for one larger operating room bed has become evident. Larger beds of this kind will help to make bariatric patients more comfortable, and physicians better able to perform their procedures. A piece of equipment like this would be used 4 to 6 times per week for patients who are undergoing LAP-BAND or gastric bypass surgery.

Anesthesia Machines
Cost: $50,000-$80,000
Catholic Medical Center is proud to provide compassionate care in a technologically advanced environment. As with all technologies, there have been several advances in anesthesia equipment. In order to continue to provide high quality care, the purchase of six new anesthesia machines has become necessary. The new equipment will combine enhanced ventilation features, electronically controlled gas delivery and agent vaporization with patient monitoring and information management to create a truly integrated system.

BIS Monitor
Cost: $50,000
BIS monitoring provides direct information about the effects of anesthetics and sedatives on the brain. The technology works by placing a BIS sensor on a patient's forehead to obtain information from electrical brain activity, or EEG. The BIS monitor then translates this information into a single number from 100 (indicating an awake patient) to zero (indicating the absence of brain electrical activity) that objectively represents each patient's level of consciousness. BIS monitoring, thereby enables clinicians to minimize the risk of under- and over- dosing of anesthetics and sedatives. Other vital signs, such as heart rate and blood pressure, do not correlate with depth of consciousness and are unreliable measures of adequate anesthesia and sedation.

Video Gastroscope
Cost: $23,000
A Video Gastroscope is a high-tech piece of medical equipment with a very high-quality miniaturized camera and light source. Newer machines offer fiberoptics and improved visual acuity for improved diagnostics. Doctors use Video Gastroscopes to examine inside the esophagus, stomach and upper portion of the small intestine. Dozens of problems from ulcers to cancer can be diagnosed speedily and accurately with no need for invasive surgery.

Doctors can take small samples and even do minor surgical procedures!
Patient benefits include quicker diagnosis for stomach, esophagus and small intestine problems. It has been estimated that each Gastroscope will be used for 50,000 examinations before it needs replacement.

Bedside Monitors
Cost: $20,000
As part of our new state-of-the-art facility, we need to increase our quantity of these monitors by four. These bedside monitors help clinicians measure a patient’s heart rate, blood pressure and pulse after surgery. The construction of the new operating rooms includes a larger post surgical unit where an increased number of bedside monitors will be necessary to care for patients.

Patient vital sign monitors provide caregivers with the essential information they require right at the patient’s side. It gives the caregiver real-time information to be evaluated and, if necessary, to treat changes in patients status correctly and promptly.

Transport Monitor
Cost: $17,000
This vital piece of equipment monitors patient’s vital signs while they are transported from the OR to the intensive care unit or to other parts of the hospital. If a problem is detected en route, the caregiver has real-time information to treat the patient quickly. In emergent cardiac situations, seconds can save lives and equipment of this kind is imperative in caring for critically ill patients.

Transport patient monitors provide essential measurements in a compact package to match the pace and unique needs of post-operative care and patient transfer.

Stretchers
Cost: $3500
Number Needed: 3

Three new stretchers are necessary to accommodate the increased number of patients that will be transported from recovery to surgery, surgery to recovery room and from recovery room to the patient care unit.

Scale
Cost: $2200
A state-of-the-art scale is needed to accommodate larger patients to insure accurate weight measurement. Without appropriate weight information, patients may not receive the appropriate amount of anesthesia or other medication. This special scale has a larger weight capacity so that we can accommodate and safely treat our larger patients that may be undergoing weight loss surgery or any other surgery.
