Are You Prepared To Quit & Make A Positive Health Change?
During the American Cancer Society’s annual Great American Smokeout, Nov. 15, and every day throughout the year, smokers and their loved ones can find the support they need to quit smoking for good. The Society provides helpful, specific tobacco-related resources via the Internet at www.greatamericansmokeout.org.

The Web site supplies materials and beneficial ideas to help smokers quit, employers create a smoke-free environment, and provides access to educational materials on tobacco.

The American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout is nationally recognized as a platform to educate the public on the dangers associated with tobacco use and to encourage smokers to quit for a lifetime by starting with just one day. Designed to provide factual information and educational materials to people concerned about the effects of tobacco use, the Great American Smokeout Web site was created to aid smokers trying to quit for the event and anytime throughout the year. On the site, visitors have the opportunity to retrieve information concerning:
  • Planning their quit day,
  • Creating a smoke-free workplace,
  • Finding local Great American Smokeout events,
  • Learning about local advocacy efforts concerning tobacco, and
  • Downloading educational materials for schools, organizations, corporations, family, and friends.

“Each day, numerous workers and patrons are exposed to the more than 60 known or probable carcinogens and 4,000 chemicals contained in secondhand smoke,” explains the American Cancer Society. “Unfortunately, for every eight smokers who die from tobacco-related illnesses, they take one nonsmoker with them. By offering these resources, our hope is that we will help smokers quit, and enable employers to begin creating smoke-free environments.”

The American Cancer Society offers support and information for smokers who want to quit via its 24-hour help line at 1-800-ACS-2345 and its Web site, www.cancer.org.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service.
