Mammography
Mammography, an X-ray examination of your breasts, is useful in the diagnosis of early breast disease. Digital mammography is considered the gold standard for detecting breast cancer. If the disease is malignant (cancer), mammography greatly improves your chances of being successfully treated. Your mammogram will be conducted in our pleasant and private surroundings at The Breast Care Center.

The mammogram will be performed using state-of-the-art, digital mammography equipment, GE Senographe DS. For your comfort, we also utilize the soft touch MammoPad®. This means you will have the most comfortable and up to date mammogram possible, in the most efficient manner.

A female technologist, registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in both mammography and radiography, performs the mammogram. Your results are interpreted by radiologists who are board certified with the American College of Radiology. The images will also be reviewed by the iCAD, a computer that aides in the detection of breast abnormalities.

Our mammography services are accredited by the American College of Radiology and certified by the Food and Drug Administration.

Screening Mammography
This type of mammogram is performed on asymptomatic patients (those without a breast problem). It is done to look for early disease, which you can’t feel. If you are still having periods, you should have the mammogram 7 to 14 days after you start your period. If your last mammogram was done elsewhere, please make arrangements to have that study sent to us, or bring it with you.

The American College of Radiology and the American Cancer Society recommend that women get their first mammogram at age 40, and one yearly after that. If you have a family history of breast cancer or if you have a breast problem, your doctor may recommend that you begin earlier.

Diagnostic Mammography
This type of mammogram is performed to look into a breast problem. This can be a lump, something seen on a screening mammogram or a follow up. A diagnostic mammogram usually will involve special pictures of your breasts and the radiologist may have to review your study before you leave. Breast ultrasound may also be done with a diagnostic mammogram.

Breast Ultrasound
Breast ultrasound is done to evaluate palpable (lumps) and non-palpable (seen on a mammogram) breast lesions. It is done while laying down, and a transducer (probe) with gel is moved over the area being looked at. This exam uses sound waves, not X-rays, and can help determine if the area is solid or fluid filled.

At The Breast Care Center, breast ultrasound is performed in a private suite using the GE Logiq 7® Ultrasound System.

Breast MRI
An MRI is a way of looking at the breast using a magnetic field and radio waves, to give a 3-D view of the breasts. This is not a replacement for a mammogram or ultrasound, but a supplement when deemed necessary by your doctor or a radiologist.

Bone Density or DEXA Scan
Bone density is done to evaluate a person’s bone mineral density or to determine if they have osteoporosis. DEXA is the gold standard to assess this. It is a very simple painless procedure, much like a standard X-ray.

At the Breast Care Center, we use the Lunar Prodigy Advance.

Breast Biopsies
At the Breast Care Center, we offer several different types of breast biopsies. All are coordinated with your doctor; the radiologist and our breast health specialist to assure you are getting the biopsy that is right for your situation.
